When the summer weather starts to approach and the slush of winter has finally disappeared, there is a certain group of people that get more excited than school kids: bikers. I’m not talking about bicyclists – although they probably are excited as well. I’m talking about motorcyclists.
Summer is the perfect time to get your motorcycle out of the garage and finally stretch your wheels after a long winter of being cooped up inside. The warmer weather and some necessary vacation time are a perfect combination for motorcycle road trips, rallies and weekly events.
There are some well-known biker events such as the March of Dimes Bikers for Babies, the annual Sturgis rally, Laconia Motorcycle Week and Daytona Beach Bike Week. While these events draw bikers from across the nation, you can also find some lesser known biker events to participate in throughout the summer. The Wetzelland Motorcycle Rally is held every year during the last full weekend of July in Van Wert, OH. This year the rally will be held from Friday, July 25 to Sunday, July 27. The annual swap meet and party includes great bands, rodeo games, tattoo contests, bike show poker run and more. There are also vendors, food, camping and showers on-site.
July 28-August 3
The 100,000 Ft. Ride takes place in Lakewood, Colorado and begins at 7 a.m. on August 2. The ride travels through the mountains and over enough passes in one day to equal 100,000ft. The ride will take you through beautiful Colorado scenery, with shortcuts available for people who don’t want to travel the whole route. Register early! This event fills up fast!
The Sturgis Bike Rally is definitely one of the most popular biker events in the country. The rally takes place for the entire week of August 4 to 10 in Sturgis, South Dakota. There are endless events and attractions at the rally, so there’s something for everyone to enjoy. The rally started in 1938 as a promotion for a small racing event and has grown to be the premier Harley rally in the world.
The Salute to American Veterans Rally, aka the Cripple Creek Rally, is the longest running motorcycle event in Colorado. The rally takes place from August 15 to 17 in Cripple Creek, Colorado. There are some unique rides in Cripple Creek; bikers see a lot of the old mining area in the Colorado Mountains. Attractions include Vietnam Memorial Travelling Wall, POW/MIA remembrance ceremony, live music, military plane flyovers, Veterans’ Parade, VIP guests and much more.
Thunder in the Rockies takes place from August 29 to September 1 and is the largest rally in Colorado. This rally takes place in Loveland, Colorado and boasts attractions such as live music by top national bands, bike show, a tattoo contest, drawings for bike giveaways, MMA Fights, bikini contests, stunt shows, Globe of Death, Wheel of Death, demo fleets, and vendors.
The Easyriders Rodeo Tour & Motorcycle Rally in the wildest motorcycle rodeo tour in America. The event takes place in Chillicothe, OH from August 28 to September 1, and has attractions such as live music, bar stool racing, dyno drags, motorcycle exhibits, used parts corral and more!
